use solenoid operated valves instead of a camshaft to control timing of internal combustion engine?
International Trucks is working on this but they are having a great deal of dificulty. Main issue is the failure of the solenoids due to the intense vibration of a knocking diesel adn the electromagnetic forces generated in a solenoid cause it to try to force itself apart by self inductance.
Well its certainly do-able on paper. Injectors are effectively solenoid valves. I expect though that there would be a problem with getting the valves to close securely enough so as to not reduce the compressions. Valve springs are very very strong and as a result they pull the automatic control valves shut nice and tight and then keep them that way in position ready for next time.
I also expect that the costs would be astronomical, and therefore I would say that the good old mechanical valves win hands down.
But, yeah, like I say, solenoids are do-able in theory.
