Movers & Shakers Fluid Automation Systems
It is important to note, basic solenoid technology was introduced in 1831 with the introduction of an electric doorbell. Sometime around 1834 French scientist Andre - Marie Ampere produced the first prototype solenoid actuated valve. By the late 1800`s solenoid valves had many applications as the Industrial Revolution began and were used in process equipment, rail and steam applications. By 1910 – one hundred years ago – there were manufacturers of solenoid valves for the general market. So, we may conclude that solenoid actuated valve technology is a mature platform.
The changes for solenoid valves came about in the 1960`s / 1970`s as industry or sector standards were created and, in turn, impacting the manufacturers designs, materials and technical performance. The miniature solenoid valve market emerged in the early 1970`s with "flow through the core" of the solenoid. The typical design incorporated three (3) ports with the NC and Common ports one end of the valve and the NO port on the other end. In 1974, however, FAS introduced the first miniature (15mm) manifold mountable (all ports in one orientation and connected to the manifold interface) solenoid valve.
