Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve
After much listening to any odd under hood noises, I noticed the EVAP
canister purge solenoid was making alot of noise. It sounds like a
"clicking" or "knocking" so I ordered a new one to see if that would
help a little with the noise. It did not.
The new one is just as noisy as the old one. After a little I see it has something to do with the canister? Do I need to replace this also?
Do any of your gurus have any idea what is wrong? What does this little guy do anyway?
The solenoid opens the purge plug valve which supplies vaccum to the canister which draws fuel vapors from the fuel tank that are stored in the canister to be burned. It's part of the emission system. The EVAP system to be more specific. No need to replace the canister. It's just a holding tank for the fuel vapors. Sounds like something is commanding the solenoid on and off.
No, it opens at some predetermined engine setting (idle, cruise or something like that) and then closes. It should not be cycling. That said, I'm not sure what would cause it without studying the FSM ans seeing how it operates and where it gets power from etc. Bad ground maybe? Not sure if a vacuum leak would cause that or not. I tend to think not. A vacuum leak would set a DTC and trip the SES light, but can't hurt to check. Also look for a crack in the canister as that would also be a vacuum leak.
